The Long and Winding Road - Day 4

We are making our way to Höfn today.  Our first interesting sight were the vast black-lava sand flats of Mýrdalssandur   It was very much like driving through a desert!  At one point we did drive through a wall of sand that was crossing the highway.

Our first stop of the day was at Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon.  We strapped Logan into the carrier and did a really nice walk along the canyon edge.  It was really pretty!

Once we were back on the road, we spotted a beautiful waterfall and picnic area.  We decided to stop for lunch, and let Logan have a run! Like many places in Iceland this location came with a fascinating story about a woman in 1904 who encountered an Elf here!

On our way to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, we continued to be in awe of the landscape.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon was really beautiful! We took a boat ride to see the seals and icebergs!

We even got to sample some of the thousand year old ice!

Logan has learned to love throwing rocks in the water, so we stood on the edge for a while to let him play.

Terns are nesting in this area right now, so we tried to avoid them! We did see a few people getting warnings from the birds to keep away!

We continued on to Höfn...

We were staying in a Harbour. The boats were incredibly thrilling to Logan! After dinner we went out to play in an old fishing boat that is on display there!

Tomorrow is a scenic driving day through the East Fjords!

  1. I just checked out your trip on Google Earth. Looks like you have a lot more ground to cover.
